Tour of Art House (the Elisha Taylor home)

This is a historic residence and is not handicapped accessible

Art House is an 1872 Gothic Revival home in the historic Brush Park neighborhood near downtown Detroit. The interior preserves original fireplaces, over-mantle mirrors, woodwork, wall coverings, decorative plaster, Minton tiles, parquet floors & etched glass. With period furnishings & collections of art & artifacts, it is truly one of Detroit’s hidden treasures.

Downtown Detroit Architecture Walking Tour

$20 per person, allow 2½ – 3 hours

Trace 140 years of Detroit’s, and America’s, architectural evolution through its changing styles: Gothic Revival, Queen Anne, Romanesque Revival, Beaux Arts, Art Deco, International & Post-Modern.

In the United States, only New York & Chicago built more Art Deco style buildings than Detroit.  See how the wealth generated by the booming auto industry was translated into some of the most spectacular examples of Art Deco architecture to be seen.  (Fisher Bldg only included with a bus tour)

Detroit’s Riverwalk: Art & Architecture

For much of its history, the best view of Detroit was had by leaving the country & viewing it from Windsor, Ontario. Now, along Detroit’s newly constituted Riverwalk, Detroiters may appreciate the history & beauty of their city’s public art & architecture from its historic shore. Our tour will include the history of Detroit’s founding on the river, the art now installed on the Riverwalk & the architecture seen from along the waterfront.

This tour will visit some of downtown Detroit’s most beautiful and historic churches. Site availability is subject to church scheduling. Designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, Belle Isle’s parkways, lagoons & canals are punctuated with examples of Romanesque Revival, Gothic Revival, Beaux Art & Art Deco architecture, as well as outstanding public monuments & amenities by such architects as Albert Kahn & Cass Gilbert.

A tour of the rich residential, commercial & institutional architecture of Detroit’s Cultural Center; including buildings by some of America’s most notable architects: Albert Kahn, Paul Cret, Cass Gilbert, Ralph Adams Cram & Minoru Yamasaki. Building interiors as well as exteriors will be included where arrangements can be made.

Art in the Detroit People Mover Stations

A tour of the public art works incorporated into each of the 13 Detroit People Mover stations. We will learn about the development of the art in the stations program, how & why the works of art were chosen & their connections to Detroit’s personages, businesses and history.

Gallery Tours of the Detroit Institute of Arts

$20 per person, allow 1½ hours minimum

(museum admission, if applicable, is not included)

Art historian, Professor Michael Farrell, will lead your tour of the DIA galleries. The following tours are available: The Italian Galleries; The French Galleries; The Dutch Galleries; The Islamic Galleries; The American Galleries; The Influence of Italy (the impact of Italy & Italian artists on others); The Ancient Galleries (Egyptian, Greek & Roman); Classical Mythology in the permanent collection of the DIA.

Fifteen person minimum required for all tours.

Architecture tours may also be done from your bus.

    • Dear Gabriela,

      Normally, our tours are available for scheduling for groups with a minimum of 15 people. We do periodically schedule tours that are available for anyone to join and we will be scheduling a walking tour of dowtown Detroit architecture for this Spring (this tour will include examples of Art Deco architecture). The date has not been decided upon yet, but I can add your email address to our mailing list so that you will receive our announcements as soon as they are made available.

  8. May I also be on your tour list via email? I was born and raised in Detroit and love it still. However, when my newly minted husband was job searching in 1967, it was the U. Of W. that hired him and so what we thought might be a few years living in Canada, became our life. Windsor and Detroit together provide so many wonderful art and music opportunities.
