Travel Tours

Art House Tours are a unique opportunity to experience and understand art in the settings for which it was created. Our carefully selected destinations are culturally rich, affordable and hospitable, and they offer comfortable accommodations and the best possible transportation. A full schedule of lecture tours is planned with enough leisure time to indulge personal interests. We strive to provide a full range of cultural experiences, including museums, galleries, private homes and collections, religious institutions, and opportunities to participate in local cultural events. We will visit not only the most important sites, but out-of-the-way, unexpected museums, churches, and restaurants that can make a tour magical.

African and African American Art in Flint

An Art House Day Trip

Saturday, 30 March 2019

We are pleased to offer a Flint excursion to visit the Flint Institute of Arts for a tour of the exhibitions Vanessa German: Miracles And Glory Abound and Engaging African Art: Highlights from the Horn Collection. Our guide will be FIA curator Tracee Glab, who is editing the forthcoming Vanessa German catalogue. We will also visit the private Mott-Warsh Collection of fine art created by artists of the African diaspora.

Miracles and Glory Abound draws from both the visual and emotional concept of the iconic painting, Washington Crossing the Delaware by Emanuel Leutze. Using her own power-figures to imitate Leutze’s composition, Vanessa German creates a conversation about public memory and the rewriting of history through the lens of privilege. The exhibition explores the complicated, nuanced history of the United States and how that history relates to our current suffering in the echoes of violence, hate, and materialism.

Dr. Robert Horn began collecting African art more than 50 years ago and his collection contains works from more than 60 African cultures. The collection includes masks as well as small-to-medium-sized figures made of wood, bone, metals, clay, and beads, representing various spiritual, social, and ceremonial messages. From ritual to status-related objects, Engaging African Art demonstrates the rich diversity of African visual expressions and cultures.

Tours, lunch, entrance fees, transportation, and driver’s gratuity are included

Cost per person: $129.00 U.S.

Registration & full payment due by 28 February 2019
