Travel Tours

Art House Tours are a unique opportunity to experience and understand art in the settings for which it was created. Our carefully selected destinations are culturally rich, affordable and hospitable, and they offer comfortable accommodations and the best possible transportation. A full schedule of lecture tours is planned with enough leisure time to indulge personal interests. We strive to provide a full range of cultural experiences, including museums, galleries, private homes and collections, religious institutions, and opportunities to participate in local cultural events. We will visit not only the most important sites, but out-of-the-way, unexpected museums, churches, and restaurants that can make a tour magical.

Art, Architecture, and Craft in Flint

 Saturday, 23 June 2018

We are pleased to offer a Flint excursion to visit Applewood, the Charles Stewart Mott Estate, and the Flint Institute of Arts to see the exhibitions From Lens to Eye to Hand: Photorealism 1969 to Today and In Search of Lost Time: Peter Milton Prints, as well as the new Contemporary Craft Wing and hear Professor Michael Farrell’s public lecture on Peter Milton at 2:00 pm in the FIA Theatre.

From Lens to Eye to Hand reexamines this important movement in contemporary art that found its roots in the late 1960s in California and New York and continues today. The exhibition demonstrates that Photorealism remains undiluted, conceptually coherent, and consistently compelling. Viewers can approach the work in an immediate level, for its technique, finesse, and appealing subject matter; but viewers can also go deeper, and enjoy the complexity and contradictions, the multiple means of entrance that Photorealism affords.

In Search of Lost Time is the title of a 2006 print by Peter Milton, which comes from an English translation of French author Marcel Proust’s monumental novel À la recherche du temps perdu, published between 1913 and 1927. As the title of the exhibition, it fittingly alludes to the enigmatic and fantastical narratives for which Milton is known in his elaborately detailed, large-scale etchings. Combining the real and surreal, Milton places photographic rendering of figures amidst soft-focused, ethereal atmospheres that seem like a dream. Works from his early period of the 1960s and ‘70s appear with more recent work, drawn from the FIA’s permanent collection and loans from a private collection. These prints demonstrate Milton’s fascination with the 19th century, using references from literature, painters such as John Singer Sargent, as well as his interest in photographers of the 1930s such as André Kertész.

Tours, private catered lunch, entrance fees, lecture, transportation & driver’s gratuity are included
